A grizzly discovery was made at Lower Otay Lake, where a man's body was found dead and partially submerged. The San Diego Police Department is treating the death as suspicious and has launched a homicide investigation following the retrieval of the body by city divers.
Responding to a report from a fisherman yesterday, the Chula Vista Police Department was first on the scene after the call came in around 09:41 a.m. However, San Diego Police Department officers took over because the lake falls within their jurisdiction. According to a news release from the San Diego Police Department, the body's retrieval involved consultation with San Diego Fire and, eventually, the San Diego City Diving Team, which arrived at approximately 12:15 p.m.
The condition of the man found was concerning, as the body was so decomposed that initial identification proved impossible. The news release indicates that factors such as age and race are still undetermined. The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office has taken on the task of ascertaining the cause of death, pending further examination.
Moving forward, the San Diego Police Homicide Unit is urging anyone with information on this incident to come forward to assist with the investigation. Those who know the case are asked to contact the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or, to share information anonymously, can contact Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
