During a White House meeting on rare earth mineral negotiations, a conflict between President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy led to Zelenskyy’s removal from the premises and the cancellation of a planned joint press conference. NBC News reports that the dispute arose over the U.S. officials' belief that Zelenskyy was not sufficiently appreciative of American support.
After the meeting, Trump returned to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach. CBS 12 reports that the cost of securing the President while in town, borne by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, is estimated at $240,000 per day. In the wake of the confrontation, the rare earth minerals deal—intended to strengthen economic ties and serve as compensation for U.S. military support—now faces uncertainty.
According to NBC News, Zelenskyy briefly addressed the situation on X, saying, "Thank you America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit. Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that." This statement contrasted sharply with Trump’s comments during the meeting, where he told Zelenskyy, “You’re not acting at all thankful, and that’s not a nice thing.”

Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, who supports Ukraine, called the meeting a “complete, utter disaster,” while questioning further cooperation with Zelenskyy. Democrats, such as Sen. Chris Coons, condemned Trump and Vance's behavior, calling it beyond disgraceful and accusing them of echoing Kremlin rhetoric, as per the NBC News. The confrontation revealed growing tension between the U.S. and Ukraine, which had previously been strong allies.
The meeting occurred amid ongoing peace talks between U.S. and Russian officials aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently led a U.S. delegation to Saudi Arabia, marking the first face-to-face talks of Trump’s administration to address the war.
