The incident, which transpired on Friday, was described by U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez, D-New Mexico, as "harassment" towards the young passengers. According to KTSM, the students were stopped and questioned by the agents, a move that sparked concern and demands for clarity from the representative.
In response to the event, a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) elucidated their actions, claiming, "The agents' primary objective was to verify the legal status of the passengers." This explanation led to all individuals aboard being confirmed as legally present within the United States, and as reported by KOAT, the agents subsequently left "without incident." Nonetheless, the agency's actions have been met with scrutiny and allegations of overly aggressive treatment.
Vasquez, voicing his dissatisfaction and concern, stated, "Our kids shouldn’t fear law enforcement on the way to a game. I’m demanding answers from DHS to ensure New Mexicans don’t face racial profiling." His statement, as per KVIA, outlined his commitment to investigate the Border Patrol's conduct that day.
