This continued recognition places the institution among the nation's elite research universities and underscores a commitment to scholarly excellence that is now expected, rather than simply aspired to, according to the university's leadership.
Published in 1973, the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education updates its listings every three years, and the University of Memphis first clinched the R1 designation back in 2021. "Carnegie R1 status has gone from an aspirational goal to an expectation in short order at our institution," UofM President Bill Hardgrave told the Newsroom.
Research remains a driving force, tied intimately to the vision the University of Memphis upholds. Introduced in 2023, their strategic plan dubbed 'Ascend' lays out seven key goals, one of which is the fortification of the university’s research standings. True to this plan, the UofM has seen a significant escalation in its research awards, scaling from $48 million in FY22 to a remarkably doubled $101 million in FY24.
It's a cause for celebration at the institution, with Executive Vice President of Research & Innovation at UofM, Jasbir Dhaliwal, adding to the acclaim. "We are honored to again be recognized as a Carnegie R1 institution," Dhaliwal remarked, positioning the University of Memphis alongside UTK and Vanderbilt, to represent the pinnacle of research excellence across the three grand divisions of Tennessee.
The attainment of this R1 status solidifies the UofM's posture within the academic community, as it continues to elevate through the ranks of research-driven education.
