Breaking boundaries and inspiring a new generation of scientists, Dr. Katja Michael, an associate professor at The University of Texas at El Paso's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has recently been honored as a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors. Dr. Michael stands out as the first female faculty member from UTEP to receive this prestigious recognition, joining a talented pool of 162 emerging academic inventors from across the country.

UTEP officials, along with peers and collaborators alike, are thoroughly thrilled to see Dr. Michael's contributions to scientific discovery acknowledged on such a respected platform. “Dr. Michael’s dedication to scientific innovation and her ability to translate complex research into real-world solutions exemplify the spirit of UTEP,” said UTEP vice president for research, Ahmad M. Itani, Ph.D.,  as per UTEP newsfeed. Her commitment has not only enriched the institution's academic environment but has also made strides toward resolving pivotal health crises affecting poverty-stricken communities.

Dr. Michael's efforts have predominantly been focused on the synthesis and application of glycoconjugates, a class of compounds with significant potential to combat neglected tropical diseases. This work has been instrumental in the fight against Chagas disease, leading to the development of diagnostic tools and a vaccine. Additionally, her research has played a crucial role in advancing diagnostics for leishmaniasis, both diseases of particular concern in the world's impoverished regions. Her impact stretches beyond the laboratory into the classroom, where she has mentored many students who've co-authored publications and have been named co-inventors on patents with her.

The National Academy of Inventors acknowledged the contributions of this year's Senior Members who collectively hold over 1,200 U.S. patents, with Dr. Michael playing a substantial role in that impressive sum. “This achievement would not have been possible without the hard work of my research team and the support of my colleagues at UTEP," said Dr. Michael as noted by UTEP newsfeed. She aims to continue to make meaningful innovations that can significantly improve global health and look forward to advancing her team's research.
