Weekend Closure Alert Northbound I-17 Shut Near Loop 303 for Pavement Improvements in PhoenixSource: Facebook/Arizona Department of Transportation

Phoenix drivers should be aware of an upcoming closure. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced the closure of northbound Interstate 17 in north Phoenix, scheduled from tomorrow through next Monday. This closure is part of a pavement improvement project near Loop 303, ADOT reports.

From 10 p.m. tomorrow to 5 a.m. next Monday, the I-17 will be closed between Loop 303 and SR 74/Carefree Highway. During this time, eastbound Loop 303 traffic at I-17 will be restricted to right-turns only onto southbound I-17. "DETOUR: Allow extra travel time," ADOT advises. Commuters can use the northbound frontage road to SR 74 as an alternate route to I-17. Certain local street closures will also be in place, but access to the city of Phoenix's Waste Transfer Station via Dixileta Drive will remain open.

Travelers who use eastbound Loop 303 or westbound Sonoran Desert Drive under I-17 will need to find alternate routes, as these roads will be closed this weekend. Those on eastbound Loop 303 can take north on 43rd Avenue to eastbound Dove Valley Road, then continue to SR 74 via the northbound I-17 frontage road. Drivers on westbound Sonoran Desert Drive can use southbound North Valley Parkway to westbound Jomax Road.

The closure is part of a larger project to upgrade 6 miles of I-17 north of Happy Valley Road, which began in May. The project includes removing old asphalt pavement and using diamond grinding on the underlying concrete to improve the surface's safety, smoothness, and durability. Additional closures are planned, including the closure of southbound I-17 between Loop 303 and Happy Valley Road from February 14-17, among others. These schedules are subject to change due to weather or other factors.

Real-time highway conditions can be accessed through ADOT's Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, the AZ511 app on Apple or Android devices, or by dialing 511. This information can help travelers stay informed about current traffic updates.
