Local shoppers might have been puzzled about finding the Voice of America Centre, a prominent West Chester shopping plaza listed as the "Voice of Mexico Center" on Google and Google Maps today. The unexpected name change sparks speculation due to timing, as it coincided with President Donald Trump's executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," a move echoed on digital maps for U.S. users, The Enquirer reports.
Kelly Skeens, director of marketing at Midland Atlantic Properties which owns the Voice of America Centre, confirms that the centre has not been officially renamed, stating, "we submitted a request to Google to have the listing restored to the correct name" in an interview obtained by The Enquirer. Yet, while confusion ensues locally, Apple Maps remains unaffected, currently showing the correct designation for the shopping center.
The discrepancy on Google's platforms arises from their listing protocols, which specify that changes can only be made by the verified business owner or through suggested edits by Google users. Despite this, WCPO notes the complex process for a business to change its listed information while remaining a verified entity on the search engine. This effort is subject to Google's thorough review process lasting up to five business days.
This incident comes amidst President Trump's recent actions to alter geographical nomenclature, including the reversion of Alaska's Denali to its former name, Mount McKinley, and the rebranding of the Gulf of Mexico for U.S. audiences. Skeens and the team at Mid Atlantic Properties are currently working to rectify the Google listing issue and clear any misunderstandings about the mall's name, which stands unchanged at its physical location off Voice of America Drive.
