A regular afternoon on Fort Lauderdale beach turned violent when a dog fight escalated to gunfire, leaving a woman and a dog with gunshot injuries and another person with dog bite wounds. The incident occurred before 5 p.m. yesterday in the 1100 block of Seabreeze Boulevard, as reported by NBC Miami. Authorities arrived on the scene to find the injured individuals and the wounded pet, with two people being transported to Broward Health Medical Center and the dog taken to an emergency vet hospital.
According to a statement obtained by CBS News Miami, the altercation began with two canines clashing, leading one of the owners to discharge a firearm resulting in his own dog being shot. During the gunfire, handling the weapon, the woman whose dog was named Sweetie was hit in the hand. An eyewitness, Joe Matelsky, provided a cellphone video capturing the chaotic aftermath of the shooting, which also injured Sweetie, the 2-year-old dog involved in the fight.
Anthony Laplant, the boyfriend of the injured woman, recounted the incident to WSVN, expressing shock and dismay at the situation. "I see my dog bleeding and my girlfriend screaming, ‘They shot me, they shot me,'" he said. Laplant had stepped away briefly to purchase gelato when the event unfolded, resulting in his girlfriend and dog sustaining injuries. Witnesses described hearing gunshots and seeing the woman and dog covered in blood.
The injured dog, Sweetie, was rushed to Veterinary Emergency Group for immediate care. Ignacio Casali, the veterinarian who attended to Sweetie, informed WSVN about her condition. "We had Sweetie here that came in. We knew that there was a gunshot wound because the police officer brought her in," said Casali. "Our nursing team quickly tried to stabilize the bleeding. We noticed that there were two entry wounds and one exit wound." Fortunately, after surgery, Sweetie was in a stable condition and recovering well.
As the investigation continues, Fort Lauderdale Police have not yet disclosed if charges will be filed in connection to the shooting. Meanwhile, local ordinances concerning leash laws have come into focus, as there is no universal state law in Florida requiring dogs to be leashed in public spaces, but Broward County does mandate that dogs off their owner's property must be leashed at all times. The police have yet to confirm whether the dogs involved in the fight were on a leash at that time, as reported by WSVN.
