A tragic occurrence at Miami International Mall has left a woman critically injured and a man, believed to be her ex, dead in a reported domestic violence incident. According to statements obtained by The Miami Herald, Doral police found the woman suffering from multiple stab wounds at around 4 p.m., yesterday. The man, found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was identified as a local business owner and her ex-boyfriend.
The confrontation took place in the kitchen of a restaurant within the food court, an area of the mall with a lesser presence of shoppers. The store owner, after the attack, fatally shot himself and the woman was rushed in critical condition to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. Despite the limited shopper presence, the event prompted an evacuation of the food court area as authorities began their investigation, as per details from a NBC Miami report.
Doral Police Chief Edwin Lopez, in an Instagram post, described the incident as isolated, affirming the safety and security of the community as paramount. Lopez extended gratitude toward the public's cooperation during the incident. The identities of the individuals involved have not been released, but the relationship between the deceased man and the woman was highlighted by officials -- emphasizing that they were previously in a romantic relationship and both involved with the business located within the mall's food court.
As the investigation continued, bystanders expressed shock and terror, with one man recounting to WSVN in Spanish, how he saw people running though he did not hear the gunshot himself. Luis Sierra, of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, addressed the magnitude of the tragedy, also urging those in domestic situations to reach out for help, "It is a very tragic event, and our hearts and prayers go out to the families affected of what happened today," Sierra communicated, "Do not be scared. We’re here to help you, and we have a lot of resources to help you."
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office has taken over the ongoing investigation into the incident, with further details yet to be disclosed.
