A 26-year-old woman is currently hospitalized after her vehicle took a sudden plunge into the icy waters of Lake Michigan near Grant Park on Saturday evening. According to Chicago police, the woman was driving southbound on DuSable Lake Shore Drive at approximately 7:40 p.m. when she unexpectedly veered off the road and into the lake. Her car remains partially submerged following the incident.
Despite the frightening ordeal and freezing conditions, she managed to escape unscathed and independently return to shore. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital "as a precaution." Authorities are currently considering issuing traffic citations in connection with the crash.
Conditions on Lake Michigan were treacherous at the time due to a protracted period of frigid weather that had left the lake's surface blanketed in ice. The immediate cause of the accident has yet to be determined, and it remains unclear why the woman's vehicle ended up in the water. Police confirmed to CBS News Chicago that she was in good condition following the incident.
Recovery efforts for the partially submerged sedan are purportedly underway, though the ice complicates the process. The police have yet to release the identity of the woman involved in the incident publicly but have indicated that they are likely to issue traffic citations, as the incident continues to undergo investigation.
