On Fort Myers Beach, an 18-year-old man was arrested for biting off part of someone's ear. As reported by NBC Miami, the Lee County Sheriff's Office stated that Jack Turner was charged with felony battery following the altercation that took place on Monday.
Details about the attack emerged after deputies responded to reports of a fight near Alva Drive and I Street. According to the sheriff's office, deputies arrived to find the victim with a partially amputated ear, a consequence of the violent confrontation. Witnesses told deputies a bystander video showed Turner on top of the victim's back, striking his head and dragging him by the hair through the sand. It was then that Turner gruesomely bit the victim's ear to quickly escalate the situation.
A witness told deputies that Turner started the conflict by using racial slurs and then striking the victim from behind. According to FOX 4 NOW, this led to a fight, which ended with the serious injury. Bystanders intervened, but the damage was already done.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office swiftly reacted to the incident, stating in their report that Turner was apprehended after deputies were able to quickly establish probable cause for his arrest. Sheriff Carmine Marceno was quoted by NBC Miami, expressing a zero tolerance policy for violence and promising to maintain Fort Myers Beach as a safe place for both visitors and residents, assuring additional patrols in the area.
Following the event, the victim was transported to Gulf Coast Hospital for medical attention, while the Violent Crimes Unit took over the ongoing investigation.
