More than 200 farm animals were seized from a property in Lorain County, and additional deceased animals were found, as reported by the Friendship Animal Protective League (FAPL). The rescue, which took place on Tuesday, stemmed from a social media post alerting authorities to potential neglect of sheep without adequate shelter and food. Following an investigation and initial cooperation from the property's owner, FAPL's Humane Investigations Department secured and executed a search warrant when the owner ceased to cooperate, as detailed in a release covered by WKYC.
Upon the humane agents' arrival, the animals, including sheep, goats, turkeys, geese, chickens, and rabbits, were found in what Gregory Willey, FAPL’s Executive Director, as "deplorable and inhumane" conditions. According to a press release obtained by FOX8, the agents discovered sheep with hooves so long they struggled to walk, as well as many that were severely underweight or dead. The FAPL reported removing 201 live animals and 29 deceased rabbits and lambs for examination, with more dead animals found on the property.
The scope of neglect prompted a large-scale rescue operation, marking it the third such endeavor by the Friendship APL in less than 30 days. In a statement from Cleveland19, Willey emphasized the strain these cases place on their staff and resources, yet underscored the critical importance of addressing animal cruelty and providing justice for the abused animals. With the case ongoing and a probable cause hearing to be scheduled, the current focus is to secure a safe haven for the rescued animals.
As a result of the influx of animals requiring care, FAPL is reaching out to the community for support. The organization is actively seeking donations, both monetary and in the form of animal care supplies, to aid in managing the animals' immediate needs. Those wishing to contribute can find more information and make donations through the FAPL website, stated a press release from the animal welfare group. Donations are essential to sustain the care of the seized animals and the ongoing fight against animal neglect and cruelty, as FAPL remains the sole society in Lorain County authorized to conduct investigations into suspected animal abuse.
