A 22-year-old Cookeville man, Derrick P. Borchardt II, died following a single-vehicle crash on I-40 near the I-440 junction on Friday night at approximately 6:30 p.m. An investigation into the crash has revealed that speed and alcohol may have been factors, as detailed in a report by the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department.
The crash involved a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer that was observed to be driving erratically and changing lanes across the interstate before the accident. According to the police report, the vehicle initially veered to the far right of the roadway, then swerved to the left, causing it to sharply collide with a rock wall. The collision led to the SUV rolling over, ultimately coming to rest on its passenger side. The driver, Borchardt, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries sustained during the crash.
Borchardt's passenger, also 22, survived with minor injuries. The aftermath of the accident was marked by the discovery of open alcohol containers within the SUV, adding to the suspicion of impairment. The passenger, who was not named in the report, indicated they had been drinking prior to the incident. This account lines up with police findings, suggesting that both alcohol consumption and Borchardt's driving behavior contributed to the fatal event.
