In a bid that rattles the political landscape of Illinois's 9th Congressional District, Kat Abughazaleh, a 26-year-old progressive TikToker, has announced her candidacy to challenge veteran Democrat Jan Schakowsky. Amassing a following with her political commentary videos on social media, Abughazaleh's entrance into the race has attracted significant attention, with her campaign raising over $100,000 in less than seven hours, as per her Instagram post.
Abughazaleh's platform hinges on critiques of Donald Trump and Elon Musk, whom she accuses of "dismantling our country piece by piece", according to Chthe icago Sun-Times. She has expressed discontent with the current Democratic response, asserting, "so many Democrats seem content to just sit back and let them." The influencer is pushing for reforms within the Democratic Party and emphasizes the need for Congressional representatives who share the financial and social burdens of their constituents, as reflected in her own experiences grappling with unemployment, lack of health insurance, and concerns about the future.
Representative Schakowsky, who has held her seat since 1999, has not yet confirmed if she will seek reelection in 2026. Despite potential generational differences highlighted by Abughazaleh, Schakowsky remains committed to her legislative focus. "I have always encouraged more participation in the democratic process, and I’m glad to see new faces getting involved as we stand up against the Trump Administration. Right now, that’s what I’m focused on: fighting back against this extreme MAGA regime," Schakowsky shared in a statement.
Despite not residing in the 9th District, Abughazaleh, who boasts a TikTok audience of over 217,000, insists on the suitability of her candidacy. While the Constitution requires only state residency, Abughazaleh assured potential supporters through an announcement video that she lives in Chicago, as noted in a profile by WGN-TV. Her campaign messages underline a generational shift she feels is necessary for and represent the district—pointing out the long tenure of Schakowsky versus the immediate concerns of younger constituents.
If successful, Abughazaleh would become the first Gen Z woman elected to Congress. Her bid comes after Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) made history as the first member of Gen Z to hold a seat in the Congress, a fact she hopes to underscore with a victory that would send ripples through a reliably Democratic district positioned in the northern Chicago suburbs, including areas such as Evanston, Skokie, and Niles.
