The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona has charged a total of 260 individuals for immigration-related crimes in a single week. During the span from last Saturday to yesterday, the office filed charges against defendants who either illegally re-entered the country or were apprehended entering unlawfully, according to a press release by U.S. Attorney's Office yesterday.

The cases included 96 charges for repeat offenders who illegally re-entered the U.S. and 155 counts against individuals for their first illegal entry. Included in the week's sweep, were nine cases against smugglers accused of facilitating the illegal transport of persons into and within the District of Arizona. These cases all stemmed from the collaborative efforts including agencies such as ICE, the DEA, and FBI, among others.

An example from the recent enforcement actions features Greiby Melissa Barcelo-Velasquez, a Colombian national. Last Tuesday, she was sentenced to 30 months in prison for conspiracy charges related to alien smuggling. The press release detailed that Barcelo-Velasquez utilized her travel company, Baul Travel SAS, to smuggle over 100 illegal aliens from Colombia to the United States since around June 2023.

Barcelo-Velasquez's case, as the U.S. Attorney's Office report specifies, is "the result of the coordinated efforts of Joint Task Force Alpha." This large-scale operation over the previous week reflects an intensified enforcement strategy targeting those who continually attempt to cross the border unlawfully, as well as the networks supporting their transit.
