A head-on collision occurred on North Kings Highway in Fort Pierce on Monday, resulting in the death of a 61-year-old local man. In the incident involving three vehicles, including a dump truck, the Florida Highway Patrol reported the man was driving his 2014 white Chevrolet Silverado northbound when he veered across the double yellow line into the oncoming traffic lane, striking a white Mack dump truck operated by a 58-year-old man from Vero Beach, as reported by TCPalm.
The collision forced the dump truck driver to lose control and the vehicle ended up on the grass shoulder, though he did not sustain injuries. The Silverado continued onward, colliding head-on with a 2016 Ford F-250 driven by a 25-year-old man from Fort Pierce, who also escaped the incident unscathed. "For unknown reasons," the initial crossing of the line by the Silverado instigated the collisions, according to the FHP report. The older Fort Pierce man succumbed to injuries after being transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where, according to FHP, a passenger with the deceased also received treatment for minor injuries, as per TCPalm.
Following the crash, which prompted a traffic homicide investigation, law enforcement officials urged motorists to steer clear of the crash area. The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office stated the investigation led to the closure of Kings Highway between Indrio Road and St. Lucie Blvd, as noted by CBS12 News.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the individual who died in Monday's incident. The traffic homicide investigation is ongoing to determine the factors that led to the fatal event.
