It's a significant step for sustainable growth in La Paz County, Arizona. Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly have put forward the La Paz County Solar Energy and Job Creation Act, an initiative motioning for the county to acquire federal lands, precisely 3,400 acres, to power ahead its ongoing solar energy projects. As outlined in the bill, the land acquisition is thought to bolster economic development and tap into Arizona's abundant solar potential. The effort is matched in the House with companion legislation, courtesy of Representatives Paul Gosar, Andy Biggs, and David Schweikert, as reported on the Senator's official website.
The project isn't new to the block. Building on a previous land transfer's success, La Paz County has made strides with a sizable solar park adjacent to the Ten West Link transmission line cutting through central Arizona. Upon realization, they're shooting for 500 MW of solar capacity and 900 MWH of battery storage, which they estimate can power up to 75,000 homes. Introduced to the workforce will be 700 construction jobs, capped with 10 permanent positions, carrying forward their ambitions for energy independence and economic opportunity.
"Solar developments create jobs and power Arizona homes with affordable, sustainable energy," Senator Gallego remarked on the significance of the initiative. "I'm proud to introduce this bill to enable La Paz County to continue its incredible work harnessing Arizona's most abundant resource – the sun." This reverberates the sentiment of fellow Senator Kelly who stated, "La Paz County is using its resources to power thousands of homes with clean, affordable energy while creating good-paying jobs," as noted by the Senator's Office.
La Paz County, in embracing this new bill, doesn't stand alone. Their appreciation was clearly voiced by Supervisor Holly Irwin, representing District 3, "La Paz County wishes to thank Senator Gallego and Senator Kelly for reintroducing the La Paz Solar Energy and Job Creation Act. This vital legislation is key to our strategic plan for La Paz County to be home to the largest solar project in the nation, bringing new jobs and economic development to our region," as per the Senator's Office.
