Robert Aaron Long, the man responsible for the 2021 Atlanta spa shootings, appeared in a Fulton County court yesterday for a new hearing. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Long faces multiple charges, including felony murder and domestic terrorism, for the shootings that resulted in eight deaths, six of whom were Asian women. This anniversary will be marked on Sunday, four years after the tragic event.
Following the tragedy, Long pleaded guilty in Cherokee County to killing four people, resulting in a life sentence plus 35 years. In contrast, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has decided to seek the death penalty, which would be the first time her office pursues such a sentence. According to 11Alive, Long is accused of killing four people in the Fulton County shootings at Gold Massage Spa and Aromatherapy Spa.
Despite previous delays, Monday's session was held as scheduled. Fulton County prosecutors argue that race and gender were factors in Long’s crimes, potentially leading to a hate crime enhancement. However, Cherokee County authorities have stated that they did not find evidence of a racial motive in their investigation, despite the diversity of the victims.
Atlanta's Asian and Pacific Islander residents have increased their activism. Calls for greater protection and more resources have intensified, as reported by 11Alive. While Long has been sentenced in Cherokee County, the case in Fulton County remains ongoing.
