
Bay Area teens with aspirations of becoming firefighters have an opportunity knocking at their door, as applications for the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Foundation's Alan D. Anderson Summer Youth Academy are now being accepted, until the deadline on March 28, this program aims to provide an immersive experience for students ages 14 to 18 interested in learning the ropes of fire rescue service.
According to Hillsborough County, those accepted into the Summer Youth Fire Academy will engage in a variety of hands-on activities including rappelling and knots, search and rescue operations fire ground operations, learning to don firefighting bunker gear, climbing aerial ladders, and even water safety with CPR and first aid also the history of the fire service will be explored extensively, the instructors, all experienced professionals from the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, will guide them through the two-week program that promises to be as informative as it is intensive.
The academy, which carries no cost for participants, will take place between June 9 and June 20 and students who are either currently in high school or graduating seniors within the specified age range can apply, it's important to note that the experience is highly structured with attendance being mandatory for the entire duration of the program that will be hosted at the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Headquarters located at 9450 E. Columbus Dr., Tampa, FL 33619, students will be equipped with uniforms and provided with lunches, snacks, water, and sports drinks throughout.
Candidates must complete their submission process by 5 p.m. on March 28, which includes providing a personal essay and two letters of recommendation, a selection panel will then review applications and make the final picks based on class size constraints, the goal is to offer a genuine glimpse into the life of a firefighter and foster the next generation of fire rescue personnel.
