Bay Area travelers planning on heading to Arizona this weekend should note that a major road closure will affect the route. According to an announcement by the Arizona Department of Transportation, westbound US 60 is scheduled to close between Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and I-10 from Friday to Monday for a traffic shift. This closure will also affect the ramps from Loop 101 to westbound US 60.

For those driving, multiple local arterial on-ramps will be out of commission. Starting from 8:00 p.m. Friday, the westbound US 60 on-ramps at Country Club Drive, Alma School Road, Dobson Road, McClintock Drive, Rural Road, and Mill Avenue will not be accessible, with re-opening planned for 4:00 a.m. Monday. Detours will be essential for navigating around, these closures, as heavy traffic and delays are expected during this period.

Arizona's Department of Transportation has mapped out alternative routes to circumvent the disruption. Drivers headed eastbound on I-10 can take southbound Loop 101 to westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) to reconnect with eastbound I-10. For westbound I-10 travelers, the detour involves taking northbound Loop 101 to westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway).

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport will still be reachable for those coming from westbound US 60, just take the northbound Loop 101 to the westbound Loop 202, and enter through Sky Harbor Boulevard. Additional road work throughout the area including, a number of ramp and lane closures is also scheduled for the weekend, so it's advisable to check in on current road conditions before setting off on a journey.

The I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project, under which this traffic shift falls, aims to reduce congestion, improve airport access, and prepare for future growth in the region. This project has been on the agenda since it was included in the Maricopa Association of Governments' Regional Transportation Plan, which received funding from a half-cent sales tax decided through Proposition 400.
