Local students from Bedford and surrounding areas recently participated in Indiana's legislative process. In January and February, students from various schools served as Senate pages at the Statehouse, with State Sen. Eric Koch (R-Bedford) supporting their involvement. According to an article on the Indiana Senate Republicans website, the group included Elizabeth Bartlett, Marissa Blais, Eulalia Dieguez, Faith Edwards, Giselle Guzman, Emery Shetler, Laura Wires, and Wyatt Wires.
These students gained firsthand experience with the workings of state government. As Senate pages, their day included a tour of the historic building, observing debates on the Senate floor, and interacting directly with Sen. Koch. "I always enjoy when students from the local community come to serve as Senate pages in the Statehouse," Koch said in a statement obtained by the Indiana Senate Republicans. "The page program allows students to learn more about their government and see it in action which is a unique experience."
The page program is available to students in grades six through twelve, providing an opportunity to observe the legislative process. Students generally attend on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays during the legislative session, with groups also scheduled to serve on Wednesdays.
Through this initiative, students from various educational backgrounds—homeschooling, public, and private schools—gather to gain a better understanding of state governance. From the halls of the Statehouse to the discussions on the Senate floor, each page had the opportunity to experience the legislative process firsthand, offering a practical understanding of governmental structures.
