In the South End neighborhood of Boston, a candy store called Madeleine's Candy Shop is drawing large crowds and social media buzz, with a focus on Swedish candy. According to CBS News Boston, customers are flocking to the shop for a taste of BUBS, a Swedish brand known for its Banana Caramel Ovals, Tutti Frutti Foam Diamonds, and Licorice Skulls.
Owner Madeleine Brason, who transitioned from a STEM career to opening the candy store, reportedly said, "The response has been beyond my wildest dreams." Brason's story is one of bold career change, as she admitted to CBS News Boston that her foray into the confectionery business started with the need to Google what a business plan was after her parents expressed concern. Despite such beginnings, Brason has capitalized on a growing trend, sparked in part by a candy store in New York and viral TikTok videos shining a spotlight on sugary treats from Sweden, and beyond.
At Madeleine's Candy Shop, the variety extends beyond just Swedish gummies. It features a selection from across the globe, as noted by The Boston Globe, including chocolates, other types of gummies, and candies from Spain, Brazil, and the Netherlands. Gummy eggs from Spain have proven to be an unexpected hit, selling out quickly despite Brason's initial doubts.
The shop's interior is designed with a New England touch, complete with striped wallpaper and canned sardine paintings, according to CBS News Boston. Each purchase comes with a pair of chopsticks, a nod to a hygienic and hands-free candy experience. This blend of international flavors and local charm, has made Madeleine's not just a local hotspot but also a destination for candy enthusiasts from afar.
Brason attributes a notable part of her success to the user-generated content on social media platforms. "Why I'm able to do the shop is because of the social media content that other people have been making," she told CBS News Boston. This underscores the significance of online presence and community engagement in promoting and sustaining small businesses in contemporary commerce.
