Residents and visitors in Honolulu can expect breezy to windy trade winds to persist this week, with increased shower activity in certain regions due to a couple of approaching old fronts, according to forecast data from the National Weather Service. Trade wind showers will predominantly affect windward slopes and coasts, though some showers might spill over into leeward areas. A high-pressure area centered around 1000 miles north-northeast of Honolulu is currently driving the windy conditions across the island chain.
The National Weather Service reports that a 1036 mb high is the main influence for these conditions, which are expected to bring an increase in trade wind showers, especially Thursday and again between Sunday and Monday, when forecasted fronts are set to move through the area, the winds are not only strong but also responsible for a Wind Advisory lasting through 6 PM this evening for parts of Maui County and the Big Island. Aviation operators have been alerted to periods of moderate turbulence and mountain obscuration, warnings which are likely to remain in place over the coming days.
Marine conditions are also a cause for attention, with rough seas anticipated due to persistent strong easterly trade winds. Small craft advisories are in effect for all Hawaiian waters through Thursday and may extend into the weekend as the conditions persist. Surfers should take note that while north- and west-facing shores will see a decrease in surf into Thursday, a couple of northwest swells expected later this week could elevate surf heights to advisory levels again by Friday night through Saturday. On the flip side, east-facing shores will continue to see rough conditions due to the ongoing trade winds, while south-facing shores will likely experience calmer, smaller waves.
For those in affected areas, such as Lanai Mauka, Kahoolawe, and various parts of Maui and the Big Island, the Wind Advisory serves as a cue to secure outdoor items and exercise caution, particularly until the advisory ceases at 6 PM today. Anyone planning to venture out onto the waters should heed the Small Craft Advisory and anticipate conditions that could potentially extend their impact into the weekend.
