The East Bay's city of Brentwood welcomed the grand opening of the largest Costco store in California with a signature ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday. Occupying a space at 5151 Heidorn Ranch Road, this gargantuan Costco stretches across 155,000 square feet, making it the biggest in Contra Costa County, surpassing stores in Antioch, Richmond, Danville, and Concord. In addition to its sheer size, the Brentwood branch boasts a gas station with 32 pumps, ranking as one of the largest in California, according to a report by SFGATE.
The Brentwood area, notably saddled with some of the country's heaviest commutes, hopes to find solace in this development. Brentwood residents averaged a 46-minute trek to work each day, revealing the longest commute for any US city holding at least 10,000 people over 15 with jobs, as per 2023 Census Bureau data. The new Costco promises a shopping hub, bakery, pharmacy, optical center, food court, and tire sales and installation center. "Brentwood is excited to have Costco make a home here and offer great jobs for so many," Tim Ogden, Brentwood's City Manager, told SFGATE. He anticipates the added revenue will continue to "help maintain the high quality of life residents enjoy" and propel further commercial growth.
The opening stirred sizable crowds, some of whom queued as early as yesterday at 10 a.m., enticed by limited item offerings. Among the throng at Heidorn Ranch Road was Justin M., an Oakland resident who camped out to claim his share of the bourbon bounty. "All kinds of bourbons, all kinds," he said, cradling a bottle of Blanton's, as reported by ABC7 News. Yet others, like Jesse Dela Cruz from Oakley, aimed for staples. "I was just hoping to get a carton of eggs, that's what I was hoping to get," he shared with ABC7 News. Popular footwear like Hokas, Birkenstocks, and Crocs quickly vanished from shelves, signaling a successful kickoff to the store's launch.
Adjacent infrastructure updates, such as the extension of Sand Creek Road from Highway 4, serve to accommodate the traffic Costco is predicted to generate. Brentwood's Mayor Susannah Meyer underlined the significance of the expected annual tax revenue of at least $1 million, stating, "People always, they don't necessarily understand that these kinds of revenues are going to help with the streets, and all the maintenance of all the parks and those sorts of things so it does, it really means something to us, it's going to help us be able to keep that quality of life that everyone wants to move here for," in an interview with ABC7 News. Meanwhile, the Antioch Police Department has issued traffic warnings, advising drivers to anticipate delays and allow extra travel time due to the influx of shoppers and the draw of rare items.
