Big changes are ahead for local athletes as the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex begins resurfacing several courts later this week. The dual-use tennis and pickleball courts, along with basketball courts, will be closed from March 17 through September 2025, weather permitting, as part of a $3.1 million Playcourt Resurfacing Project across multiple county sites.
Pacific Concrete Cutting & Coring, Inc. is contracted to carry out this extensive renovation, a name now familiar to those following the county's infrastructure updates. The Department of Parks and Recreation, in a statement released March 12th and obtained by the County of Kauai press page, extends gratitude towards the community for its patience and understanding during the construction period. On the bright side, with work completed at Wailua Homesteads, players can already see the fruits of similar projects, having regained access to their newly resurfaced basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts.
While the sports complex may be temporarily closed, the Department has been offering updates on the ongoing construction efforts at other local sites. The Wailua Houselots basketball court is expected to be back in business by April 9, while the park's tennis and pickleball courts have already welcomed back players. Several improvements coordinating with the construction work on these all-important community spaces show the county's commitment to maintaining high-quality recreational facilities.
For those still looking to serve or shoot hoops, the construction at Puhi Park's tennis and basketball courts is in full swing. Work on these courts is anticipated to wrap up by June 13, reconnecting the community with another vital site for sports and outdoor activity. Concerned residents or anyone seeking further clarity on these projects are encouraged to reach out to the Department of Parks and Recreation directly at 808-241-4460 or via email at [email protected].
