Get ready to celebrate the latest addition to the Twin Cities transit system this Saturday, March 22, as the METRO Gold Line Bus Rapid Transit officially opens its doors to the public. The grand opening is set to include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Woodlane Park & Ride, followed by an array of community activities at both the Woodlane and Sun Ray Park & Ride locations throughout the day.
From 10 to 11 a.m., state, federal, and county officials will gather for the ceremonial inauguration at 1100 Woodlane Dr., Woodbury, MN, heralding a new chapter in Minnesota's transit story. The festivities will continue until 2 p.m., with music, entertainment, games, and family-friendly fun, alongside Gold Line swag and giveaways, according to the Washington County website.
The Gold Line promises to provide a seamless and swift transit experience with its dedicated lanes, all-day frequent service, and a slew of passenger amenities like heated shelters and real-time information. "The opening of the METRO Gold Line is a big milestone for Washington County,” Commissioner Stan Karwoski of District 2 said. “The Gold Line is another option that will make it easier than ever for people to get where they need to go."
Spanning 10 miles, the Gold Line connects St. Paul with Maplewood, Landfall, Oakdale, and Woodbury, skirting the I-94 for a major part of its route. Future plans include stretching the service to downtown Minneapolis by 2027. "Gold Line will help Washington County employers to attract and retain workers by offering an affordable and reliable option for employees to get to and from jobs,” explained Commissioner Michelle Clasen from District 5 in statements obtained by Washington County's official announcement.
