Owners of businesses in Chicago's Kenwood and Washington Park neighborhoods have been put on alert following a spate of recent burglaries targeting restaurants. According to an alert from the Chicago Police Department, an individual fitting a specific description has made a habit of breaking into closed establishments, resulting in thefts that have left local proprietors concerned for their property and safety.
The suspect, as detailed by the police, is a male believed to be between the ages of 35 and 50, clad in a neon green vest over black clothing. A recognizable figure, one might think, yet he has so far managed to evade capture following these incidents. He is wanted in connection with break-ins that have occurred at two locations: one on the 1100 block of East 47th St. and another on the 100 block of East 51st St. It seems the culprit has a penchant for striking in the stillness of night and early morning hours as these burglaries were carried out between March 9 and 10, 2025.
In a cautionary statement obtained by the Chicago Police Department's news, business owners are advised to take proactive measures to safeguard their venues. The recommendations include maintaining a well-lit property perimeter, securing all doors and windows, and quickly addressing any damages to security features such as windows and locks. It's also suggested that surveillance video, if available, be kept and duplicated for the purposes of investigation.
Moreover, in the event of a burglary, proprietors are urged not to disturb the crime scene and to call the authorities immediately. Additionally, they should collect contact information from any witnesses, indicating an effort to bolster the odds of catching the perpetrator.
