Chicago teachers and firefighters rallied together Monday on the Near West Side, a rare show of unity as both groups pushed for new contracts. Members of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and the Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local Two gathered at Monroe and Laflin, alternating between chants and cheers as their prolonged negotiations continued, as per CBS News Chicago.

Despite the collective spirit, both parties are grappling with their unresolved concerns. The CTU is nearing an elusive agreement with the Chicago Public Schools, but hurdles like prep time for elementary teachers stubbornly linger on. Pat Cleary, president of the firefighters' union, pointed out to ABC7 Chicago the shared battles. "This is about unity, coming together, getting benefits. We have the same issues, staffing. They need better staffing in the classroom; we need full staffing on our engines and trucks," he said.

Meanwhile, a CTU spokesperson mentioned to CBS News Chicago that talks with the Board of Education went well over the weekend, with potential improvements to the REACH evaluation system and teacher assistant staffing on the horizon.

While the groups continued to chant and raise signs high, financial practicalities cannot be overlooked. The city and the CTU are currently about $8.5 million away from an agreement, as detailed by ABC7 Chicago.
