The hunt is on for a new County Commissioner in Clackamas County, Oregon, as the Board of County Commissioners has officially opened applications to fill Position 4. The call for candidates began today, with hopefuls having until April 9 by 5 p.m. Pacific Time to submit their resumes and cover letters, according to an announcement on the county website.
Oregon state statutes dictate that candidates must meet certain qualifications: they must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years of age, a current Clackamas County resident for at least the previous 12 months before the election, and be registered to vote in Clackamas County. These stipulations are non-negotiable, but the Board might also weigh additional factors such as residence location, prior elected experience, and plans to contest in the next election for this seat.
Applicants are also being asked to lay out their vision and qualifications in their cover letters, answering questions like why they want to become county commissioner and what they consider to be the top issues facing Clackamas County. Moreover, they should clarify their policy positions and highlight the expertise and experience they can bring to the Commission.
The appointed commissioner will fill a term that extends through December 2028. The chosen candidate will hold the office until the end of 2026 before the position is put to a vote in the General Election on November 3, 2026, "The Board will appoint an individual to serve in the role until December 2026," the county announcement explains. Filing for the unexpired 2-year term will open up in September 2025.
