Following a report of road rage involving a firearm last Tuesday, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) identified and tracked down the suspect, leading to an armed confrontation and an officer-involved shooting. The incident occurred in the 2100 block of Delta Drive, where officers, after gaining suspect information, located the individual's residence.
Authorities announced their presence before attempting to contact the suspect at around 9:30 PM. Upon the door opening, the suspect, Avery Denton, age 42, reportedly pointed a handgun at the responding officers. One officer fired their weapon during this encounter, fortunately resulting in no injuries. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office reported that Denton was then taken into custody without further incident.
Following the confrontation, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office took over as the primary investigative body for the officer-involved shooting, in compliance with Colorado State law, which outlines such protocol. No additional details regarding the shooting have been made public as it remains an active investigation, though it was shared that Denton was charged with Menacing and his bond was set at $2,000.
