A man in Columbia Township was critically injured after an altercation with Hamilton County deputies on Friday afternoon. Robert Eldred, 39, reportedly was brandishing a baseball bat and later an axe when he was shot by law enforcement. According to a report obtained by WLWT, the deputies had responded to Cambridge Avenue around 4:40 p.m. following a report of a suspect threatening people with a baseball bat.
The situation escalated when Eldred failed to comply with deputies’ orders to drop the bat, as noted in a WLWT article. He then entered his house and emerged with an axe. Despite law enforcement's use of non-lethal measures, including a rubber bullet and a Taser, Eldred continued to threaten them. He was subsequently shot twice, with one bullet hitting him on the left side.
In an interview, Mary Caron Melton with HCSO detailed that despite being shot, Eldred attempted to disarm one of the deputies, prompting a fourth officer to deploy his Taser. This action eventually led to Eldred's collapse. The encounter's aftermath didn't settle there; as told by FOX19, Eldred continued to resist and actively fought deputies while they attempted to take him into custody. He was subsequently transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for his critical condition.
Eldred now faces four counts of felonious assault due to his actions toward the deputies involved. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
