A morning calamity struck Concord yesterday when a wrong-way driver caused a fatal head-on collision. According to a social media post from the CHP Contra Costa, the crash happened around 2:58 a.m. on Kirker Pass Road, north of Hess Road, when a Honda Civic, driving northbound in the southbound lanes, collided with a Toyota 4Runner. The catastrophic accident claimed the lives of both drivers at the scene.
The initial findings of the CHP suggest that the Honda Civic's driver, who was not secured by a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle upon impact. Tragic as the incident is, DUI is suspected to have played a role in this disaster, with toxicology results still to be ascertained. The aftermath of the crash saw both directions of Kirker Pass Road shut down to gather evidence and reconstruct the event from roughly 3:23 a.m. until they were re-opened at 7:53 a.m.
