A tragic incident unfolded in the depths of Twin Caves in Marianna, Florida, this past week as a cave diver was found dead, while two of his companions were rescued, according to officials. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office dealt with a call concerning overdue divers at around 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, prompting a search and rescue operation that concluded with the sad discovery of the deceased diver and the safe recovery of two others.
The complexity of the Twin Caves, located within Jackson Blue Springs Park and infamous for its tight passages and a penchant for heavy silting, set the stage for expertise and bravery. Dive Magazine reported on the involvement of local diver and cave instructor Mehdi Zinetti and the owner of Cave Adventures, Edd Sorensen, who was contacted during the search. As stated by Sorenson, Zinetti, never having done an active body retrieval before this tragedy, would find the deceased diver "by feel" in the zero-visibility conditions after shifting gear from a rebreather to open circuit scuba.
