The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation has announced necessary maintenance for Hilo's Wailuku Bridge, leading to changes in traffic patterns that will affect commuters. The Wailuku Bridge, located on Hawai‘i Belt Road (Route 19) between Waiānuenue Avenue and Pukihae Street, has been found to have deterioration that requires immediate repairs following a recent inspection.

According to the HDOT's announcement, a detour was implemented at 4:30 p.m. yesterday, directing Hilo-bound drivers through Hau and Wainaku Streets. While these alternative routes are part of the county's road network, they will accommodate the diverted traffic. However, motorists heading toward Honoka‘a will still have access to the bridge.

The Hilo-bound detour is expected to remain in place until the bridge repairs are complete, with oversized or overweight vehicle permits also restricted for the same period. HDOT's current projections indicate that emergency repairs should be finished by the end of the week, although the timeline could change if additional work is needed during the repair process.

Hawaii's transportation infrastructure has seen Wailuku Bridge undergo multiple repairs in September 2019, November 2020, and April 2023. A full refurbishment of the bridge is scheduled for 2027, reflecting the ongoing need for maintenance of the island’s infrastructure.
