Over the weekend, the El Paso Community College baseball team saw a significant leap in the rankings, now sitting at #22 in the NJCAA Division One after a series of dominant performances against Luna Community College. According to EPCC News, the team swept two doubleheaders, culminating in a record-breaking 27-1 win on Saturday, the largest margin of victory in the program’s three-decade history.
EPCC baseball's prolific scoring isn't a novel occurrence, with the team posting 27 runs or more in several previous games, including a 34-23 win against Clarendon College in 2006 and a similarly high scoring 27-25 game against Luna Community College in 2015. Last weekend's landslide win is a testament to their powerful offense. Albeit the Tejanas softball team faced an initial setback, they quickly recovered and secured three consecutive wins against Luna, improving their season to a 7-9 overall record.
In a display of batting prowess that offered fans much to cheer about, EPCC Baseball now readies to host Western Texas College for a four-game series, opening the Western Junior College Athletic Conference play on March 7. Games spanning Friday and Saturday will have spectators on the edge of their seats, with doubleheaders scheduled at 11:00 a.m. and approximately 1:00 p.m. each day.
While baseball had the spotlight with their historic win, EPCC's softball team demonstrated resilience and skill, shaking off an early loss to dominate Luna in the remaining three games of their series. The Tejanas have a break this weekend and look forward to hosting Frank Phillips College to begin WJCAC play on March 21-22. Despite an uneven start to their season, the ladies have shown that they are a force to be reckoned with on the diamond.
