Get ready for some late-night delays if you're heading west on Interstate 40 through Kingman. Upcoming construction could slow down your drive, with full closures planned that might leave you parked for half an hour at a stretch. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is gearing up to install bridge girders, paving the way for a new interchange with US 93 that they hope will make the whole area smoother for traffic in the long run.
Mark your calendars if you're traveling at night: March 10, 13, 17, and 20 are the dates to watch out for. Westbound I-40 will be down to just one lane from just past Stockton Hill Road to east of White Cliffs Road between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., so tighten up your schedule or find another route, because on these dates, you might find yourself at a standstill when crews put the freeway to bed for up to 30 minute stretches to lift those heavy girders into place.
If you must pass through, there’s a small window when traffic may flow more smoothly. From 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., flaggers will direct vehicles through the construction zone, managing traffic with stops and starts, according to ADOT.
Nighttime travelers should plan ahead to avoid delays. No one wants to be stuck in a construction zone instead of sleeping. For details or real-time updates, visit the ADOT website for the Kingman interchange project.
