Tragedy struck the intersection of Hayward Boulevard and Civic Avenue last Friday in a devastating three-vehicle collision that claimed the life of one individual and left several others injured. The Hayward Police Department reported to the scene shortly after the accident, which occurred at approximately 9:33 p.m., as first noted by the City of Hayward's official news release.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that one vehicle had been carrying four individuals. The 19-year-old male driver, a Hayward resident, cooperated and offered a statement regarding the incident. Sadly, a 20-year-old female passenger also from Hayward was found to be unresponsive. Efforts were swiftly made to save her life fully, but despite medical intervention, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger, an 18-year-old female who is not a Hayward resident, was transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition, while a male juvenile passenger in the same vehicle was also hospitalized with expectations of a full recovery.
The catastrophic event also involved two other vehicles, each containing a single occupant. The driver of the second vehicle, a 21-year-old non-Hayward resident, endured minor injuries and is in stable condition. Meanwhile, the 37-year-old male non-Hayward resident behind the wheel of the third vehicle reported minor injuries but did not seek hospital treatment. The individuals' identities are withheld at this time as officials await the appropriate protocol for formal identification by the Alameda County Coroner's Office.
As investigations continue earnestly, authorities have not yet taken any persons into custody. Determining whether alcohol was a contributing factor in this collision is one of the key investigative steps currently being pursued. Hayward Police encourage anyone with information relevant to the collision to contact their Traffic Bureau urgently. This incident marks the city's third fatal collision of the year, adding a somber note to 2025's roadway safety concerns.
