The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is issuing a notice to local adventurers and nature aficionados—expect some detours and delays as flooding and infrastructure failures have necessitated the closure of several roads within the Richard K. Yancey and Pomme de Terre Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs).

Specifically, the deluge has overtaken Blackhawk Boat Landing Road, Annie’s Lake Road, Lincecum Road, Union Point Road and Dobbs Bay Road at Richard K. Yancey WMA, while Pomme de Terre WMA’s Sutton Lake Road has also succumbed to the waters, visitors and hunters planning excursions into these popular hunting and fishing spots will need to make alternative arrangements as the LDWF takes action to assess and mend the damage brought on by Mother Nature’s less forgiving side.

In a recent update from LDWF's official announcement, Routen Camp Road and the Warren Trailhead parking lot in the Richard K. Yancey WMA were also listed as closed due to collapsed culverts, ensuring the safety of visitors is the priority as the department works diligently to reopen the areas as soon as possible for everyone looking to enjoy what these wild spaces have to offer, from the seasoned angler to the youth on their inaugural deer hunt.

The closures affect not just the roads but also some recreational activities, as Richard K. Yancey WMA, sitting about 35 miles south of Ferriday on Louisiana Highway 15, boasts a rich array of game species such as deer, squirrel, rabbit and a selection of fowl; the area is also known for spring flooding that traditionally offers prime fishing for bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish, Pomme de Terre WMA, approximately six miles east of Moreauville on Louisiana Highway 451, offers its own slew of outdoor pursuits, these WMAs require visitors to have a WMA Access Permit or another relevant hunting/fishing license, which can be acquired through LDWF’s website.
