Fulton County has approved a new eco-friendly project with the City of College Park for a botanical garden. The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a land lease agreement last Wednesday, as reported by Fulton County's official news release. The 40-acre Camp Truitt property at 4300 Herschel Road will be the site for the garden.
The College Park City Council has committed $5.4 million to the project. Chairman Robb Pitts praised the investment, describing it as an enduring benefit for future generations. The botanical garden will enhance the quality of life in the south Fulton region.
Approximately 32 acres of the Camp Truitt property will be developed into the garden. The agreement ensures that current site activities, such as a 4-H camp, a senior center, and community garden programs, will continue without disruption. A community liaison will be appointed to ensure ongoing communication.
The garden will be built under a 50-year lease for $1 per year, with an option to renew for another 50 years. Councilman Roderick Gay, who is also a horticulturalist, led the effort for the garden. He highlighted the project’s potential to attract visitors from both the local area and around the world due to its proximity to Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.
