The Garland Police Department extended its paw–I mean, hand–of welcome to its latest member, a furry officer named Recon, a year-and-a-half-old Shepherd from Hungary. Recon, along with his partner K9 Lemboris, has just completed an intense eight-week Basic Handler School in California, according to a social media post by the Garland Police Department.
Now certified in narcotics detection and patrol, Recon is not just a good boy. He's a trained professional ready to put his nose to the ground for the service of the Garland community. Recon and K9 Lemboris have been hitting the books and the streets for roughly three months, the sort of buddy-cop duo that's more about the bond than the badge.
While the canine's sharp senses and quick reflexes are primed for "catching bad guys," it's also about the positive impact such a partnership can bring to local communities. Recognition of their role, however, is not without its critical engagement with the means and methods of policing.
