An investigation is currently ongoing in Brunswick, Georgia, following an officer-involved shooting which left 18-year-old Larry Labraun Kirkland injured. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) stepped in at the request of the Brunswick Police Department to independently uncover the events that unfolded on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Kirkland became involved in a violent incident on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, which precipitated a quick response from local law enforcement. The officers managed to swiftly locate Kirkland after he had left the initial scene. Fleeing from the authorities, his attempt to run was brought to an abrupt halt in the yard of a residence on the 2700 block of Wolfe Street. According to GBI statements, verbal commands were issued as officers tried to detain the young man.
During the confrontation, a gun was spotted on Kirkland, escalating the situation. One officer deployed a taser in the midst of the struggle, while another chose to discharge their firearm, subsequently injuring Kirkland. He has since been admitted to a local hospital, where his injuries are reported as non-life-threatening.
The community awaits the results of the GBI's investigation, which will to thoroughly review the incident. In due time, the findings will be presented to the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for further appraisal.
