Tragedy struck in Hiram, GA, this past Sunday as officers from the Hiram Police Department were involved in a shooting following a violent incident, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) reported. According to the GBI's official account, the ordeal began with a 911 call from an apartment complex at approximately 1:15 p.m. Responding officers found a man dead in the street and were soon confronted by a knife-wielding woman, who appeared to be heavily covered in blood.
Attempts to peacefully resolve the situation failed when the woman began to aggressively charge towards the officers. Despite their efforts to use non-lethal force and repeated verbal commands, the woman refused to comply and appeared to determinedly ignore all attempts at de-escalation. The GBI relayed that she not only threatened the officers but also self-inflicted a stab wound before being shot by one of the officers at the scene.
The woman was promptly given medical attention and transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. As protocol demands, a GBI Medical Examiner in Decatur, GA will conduct an autopsy to determine the precise causes of death for both the woman and the man found at the scene.
While the identity of the woman has been ascertained, her next of kin have not been informed yet, and the man's identity remains unknown. With the GBI lab set to potentially conduct identification attempts, the investigation continues to unfold. Once the investigation completely wraps up, findings will be passed to the Paulding County District Attorney's Office for a thorough review, ensuring that all aspects of this tragic event are accounted for.
