
Gilbert will host the Sensory Awareness Family Event on March 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gilbert Public Safety Training Facility. The event aims to provide a calm environment for individuals with special needs to interact with local police and fire personnel, according to the Town of Gilbert.
The Gilbert Public Safety Training Facility at 6860 S Power Road will host an event featuring hands-on experiences like police traffic stops and fire truck rides. The event will also include displays of equipment used by Gilbert's police and fire departments. The city stated, "We can't wait to see you there!" Reservations are required and can be made on Town of Gilbert's official website.
Gilbert has become an Autism Certified Community, with its police, fire, and parks and recreation departments completing training to improve engagement with individuals in the autistic community. The city stated that the departments have gained "valuable insights for effectively engaging with individuals in the autistic community, particularly in emergencies situations for public safety personnel." As part of these efforts, the city will hold the Sensory Awareness Family Event event on March 29, with RSVPs encouraged, as stated by the Town of Gilbert.
