In a move to fortify Utah's financial 'watchdog' team, Gov. Spencer Cox has recently announced the appointment of Shaun Berrett as the new commissioner of the Utah Department of Financial Institutions (DFI), a decision that now awaits confirmation by the Utah State Senate. Berrett steps into this role with more than two decades of experience in bank regulation and supervision, a tenure marked by critical oversight responsibilities both at the state and federal levels.
Berrett's appointment is intended to seamlessly succeed outgoing Commissioner Darryle Rude. "Shaun’s decades of experience within DFI and his deep expertise in financial regulation make him the ideal choice," Gov. Cox said, as per Utah Governor's Office. As the baton is passed, it's expected that Berrett’s deep-rooted familiarity with the intricacies of financial regulations will be an asset not only to the department but also to the broader banking community in Utah.
Having joined DFI back in 1998, Berrett's career trajectory has been both upward and focused. Starting as an examiner, he later went on to occupy significant roles at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and most recently served as DFI’s chief examiner. In this capacity, Berrett managed day-to-day operations and spearheaded the state's depository institution examination program, further emphasizing his readiness to take on the mantle of leadership within the financial regulatory sphere.
With such a wealth of experience behind him, Berrett is forward looking to his new role. "I am honored to serve as commissioner and grateful for the opportunity to continue working with Utah’s financial institutions as we ensure our state’s banking system is robust," he conveyed, as obtained by Utah Governor's Office. His tenure as supervisor of industrial banks, where he supervised the nation’s most significant industrial banking sector, suggests his capability to understand the bigger picture and steer Utah's financial institutions towards continued safety and growth.
Berrett is widely recognized for his contributions at the state and national levels, including his past role on the Board of Directors for the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS). He's not just about ledgers and laws though, Berrett, a University of Utah graduate, enjoys hitting the road with his family, staying grounded through the bonds of travel and exploration with his wife, Bonnie, and their three adult children.
