Earlier this week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials sparked controversy by detaining an international graduate student on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. The University, as stated on their website, claimed to have had no knowledge prior to the detention and affirms that it did not provide any information to federal authorities beforehand, as per the Minnesota Senate DFL.
The response from local policymakers came swiftly, with Senator Doron Clark (DFL-Minneapolis) expressing his dismay at the federal agency's actions around the education institution, he emphasized that university campuses should be sanctuaries for all their inhabitants, ICE’s activity around the University of Minnesota is a cause for consternation and vigilance Clark calls upon the community to remain informed and to resist what he considers the Trump administration's harmful rhetoric and policies toward immigrants, as reported by the Minnesota Senate DFL.
Senator Clark, illustrating the depth of his reaction, categorized the situation as one capable of nurturing fear and antagonism within the campus. “I am saddened and angered that ICE is operating around the University of Minnesota. Our campuses should be a safe place for all students, staff, and visitors. I will be monitoring the situation closely, and encourage folks to stay vigilant and well-informed,” he declared, as stated by the Minnesota Senate DFL.
