The Las Cruces Police Department has scheduled a news conference for March 20 to discuss details about a police-involved shooting that took place on Thursday. The incident, which resulted in the injury and subsequent arrest of 19-year-old Gabriel Padilla, unfolded along the 800 block of South Main Street. According to the Las Cruces Police Department, the briefing will be at City Hall in the Council Chambers and will be streamed via the city's YouTube channel.

Details from the Las Cruces government website report that the situation began when police responded to a call about a man with a gun on the 500 block of South Main Street, and upon their arrival, Padilla led officers on a short foot chase, during the chase at least one shot was fired and Padilla was struck then fell to the ground at the 800 block, where a firearm was found near his location, following this, he was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital where he remains in stable condition. Padilla is currently facing charges including Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer (Deadly Weapon), Negligent Use of a Deadly Weapon, and Resisting, Evading, or Obstructing an Officer.
