Last week, an unforeseen force of nature nudged the city to take a safety-first approach, leading to the closure of multiple sports fields at the Hadley Sports Complex and the Apodaca Park softball fields. According to the City of Las Cruces, a light pole toppled over at the Maag sports field last Monday, presumably due to the strong winds that swept through the area. Fortunately, the incident did not result in any injuries.
The incident prompted an examination of all light fixtures at the complex's sports fields, including Harty, Paz, Ron Galla, Maag, and the Apodaca softball fields, which will remain closed until they can ensure patrons' safety. The tall structures that once illuminated night games, standing there like silent sentinels of the recreation areas, are to be removed and replaced before any activities can resume. Venturing out into the closure, citizens who frequent these facilities will need to find alternative grounds, as updates on their reopening patiently await.
Those who had penciled in events and sporting activities on their calendars will find the Parks and Recreation staff at their service, working through the logistics to either reschedule or relocate to other sites. While the popular fields lie dormant for now, sports and recreation life in the city does march on, the Apodaca Park baseball fields, Burn Lake soccer fields, High Noon fields 1-5, and East Mesa Public Recreation Complex fields all welcome athletes and families looking to keep the game alive.
Meant to reinforce the preparedness of the city, staff are in active discussions with vendors to fast-track the solution to this safety concern. The city's commitment was reaffirmed through their promise to deliver the latest information once it becomes available. In a landscape that seldom rests, where the community’s heart beats in the rhythm of sporting events, the anticipation for the fields' return remains high, alongside the expectation for future gatherings to take place under the watchful eye of new, sturdier light poles.
