A hunter who lost his bearings while pursuing rabbits has been safely returned to solid ground, thanks to a collaborative search and rescue effort in the Attakapas Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in St. Mary Parish. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), alongside the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), received a distress call just as the evening shadows began to lengthen at 5:30 p.m. last Saturday, according to a report by the LDWF.

The unfolding drama commenced when the man, embedded in his hunting group, ventured into the woods at noon - the rest of his cohort later realized his absence and contacted the authorities as dusk fell, initiating the search, law enforcement personnel set out on foot while the USCG took to the skies to canvas the dense woods below and thanks to their joint efforts, the hunter was located by helicopter around 8:30 p.m., in a swift action the USCG was then able to extract the hunter from his unintended wilderness isolation.

Upon retrieval, the man narrated his ordeal, explaining how he "got turned around" and lost his way while hunting. In a twist of ill fortune, he recounted to search teams that his phone, a potential lifeline, was inadvertently left behind in his vessel amidst the hunt. Fortuitously, the ordeal ended without harm, and the hunter did not require medical attention upon rescue.

Commendations for the successful operation go out to the LDWF agents involved namely Sgt. Jake Darden, Sgt. Lucas Hidalgo, Senior Agent Joel Rubio and Agent Harry Gaines who's timely coordination with local Sheriff deputies and the U.S. Coast Guard was paramount in locating the disoriented woodsman, this incident stands as a testament to the collaboration between local and federal agencies ensuring the safety of individuals in distress within our natural habitats.
