The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) has proposed changes to fishing rules at Bussey Brake Reservoir in Morehouse Parish, a popular spot for black bass fishing. If approved after public comment, the maximum size limit for black bass will increase from 16 to 18 inches. The rule allowing anglers to keep one bass over the limit will be replaced with a new rule that lets anglers keep a bass over 22 inches in a livewell to weigh it, either personally or on a certified scale at the boat ramp. The daily limit remains at five bass. These changes reflect Bussey Brake's status as a top bass fishing destination after its 2020 renovation, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
It's no surprise that tweaks to the fishing game are afoot when you consider the reservoir's “new lake effect", a phenomenon that follows restoration efforts, creating an ideal habitat for the largemouth bass to flourish, grow rapidly, and literally, because the catch and growth rates have been nothing short of impressive, so much so that since its grand reopening, an estimated 100 bass, each tipping scales at 10 pounds or more, have been reeled in, as reported by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. “Protecting and prolonging trophy bass fishing opportunities at Bussey Brake Reservoir is a top priority, creating the maximum opportunity for anglers to catch a new state record or personal best bass,” Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission Secretary Madison Sheahan underscored the goals of the new regulatory blueprint.
