A tragic turn of events unfolded on the Spaulding Turnpike in Dover as a Massachusetts man succumbed to his injuries following a collision with a dump truck. State Troopers from the Troop A barracks were quick to respond to an automatic crash-detection notification alongside additional 911 calls at approximately 8:02 a.m. yesterday. The fatal incident resulted in the passing of James L. Stammers, 39, of Lynn, Massachusetts. The New Hampshire State Police confirmed the death of the SUV driver at the scene.
The preliminary findings of the investigation suggest that Jamie L. Joy, 55, of Pittsfield, who was operating the 2024 Western Star dump truck, had come to a stop in the highway's right lane, due to traffic ahead. It was then that Stammers' 2016 Lincoln Navigator collided with the rear of the truck. While Joy did not suffer any injuries, it was Stammers who, tragically, could not survive the impact.
Authorities closed all northbound lanes to manage the aftermath of the crash, rerouting traffic off Exit 8 West for over three hours. The thorough efforts to clear the scene saw the road reopen at 11:36 a.m., easing the disruptions faced by morning commuters.
In the wake of the accident, the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit, and the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Unit were called to assist with the meticulous investigation. Further support was provided by personnel from the Dover Police Department, Dover Fire and Rescue, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. Troopers are continuing to piece together the circumstances leading up to the crash and have invited anyone with useful information to step forward, with Trooper Alison Baumbach being the point of contact at [email protected].
